Cataloging Assistant – Main Library

Under the general direction of the Head of Technical Services, the Cataloging Assistant performs functions in cataloging, acquisitions, and processing. The position requires an understanding of or an ability to learn the overall functions and workflow of the Technical Services department. The position requires an understanding of or an ability to learn the functions of the library system to serve the public and an understanding of how Technical Services supports the public services staff. The position requires close attention to detail, organizational skills, and knowledge of or an ability to learn cataloging practices based on AACR2, RDA and MARC format.

Qualifications / Experience:
The minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree or a combination of education and library experience. Basic computer experience with internet searching and standard office software, including Microsoft Office products, is required.

Employee may need to carry, push, pull, or lift up to 40 pounds. Proper lifting techniques required. Push and pull a fully loaded cart. Must have ability to work under pressure, coordinate multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and meet firm deadlines.
COVID-19 Changes/Additions to Job Description:
The employee in this position will be assigned to train inside the library for a number of weeks until job proficiency is reached. At that time, the employee in this position may work from home on a regular set schedule. The employee will be expected to come to the library at least weekly to pick up and return items to be cataloged and to meet with colleagues. While in any library building, masks must be worn at all times unless on break in the lunch room. Six feet of physical distance from patrons and coworkers is expected at all times. To work remotely, applicants must have solid bandwidth internet access at home. A laptop, monitor, and other work tools will be provided by the library. The option to work remotely may be discontinued with a 30-day notice to the staff member, though the library has no formal plans at this time to eliminate remote work for any staff member.
