Cataloging Assistant – Main Library

Type of Position:  part-time (20 hours per week)
Starting Salary:  Starting at $11.00 per hour

Under the general direction of the Head of Technical Services, the Cataloging Assistant performs functions in cataloging, acquisitions, and processing. The position requires an understanding of or an ability to learn the overall functions and workflow of the Technical Services department. The position requires an understanding of or an ability to learn the functions of the library system to serve the public and an understanding of how Technical Services supports the public services staff.  The position requires close attention to detail, organizational skills, and knowledge of or an ability to learn cataloging practices based on AACR2, RDA and MARC format. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Using TLC’s Library Solution cataloging module, performs copy cataloging on assigned materials, and adds item records to the bibliographic records.
  2. Prioritizes assigned materials for cataloging and processing; prints labels and puts barcodes on items cataloged.
  3. Performs original cataloging by editing found records that are similar to the item in hand; deletes items and bibliographic records as needed.
  4. Maintains AACR2 and RDA standards for all MARC record cataloging according to local procedures and practices; updates MARC records and spine labels on existing items to reflect current RDA and local labeling standards.
  5. Provides input into establishing local practices and procedures.
  6. Participates in processing functions as needed, including unpacking, checking in, repairing and processing materials when Processing Technicians are not available.
  7. Assists in ordering supplies for processing and repair functions, when needed.
  8. Troubleshoots problems presented by staff in regard to circulation issues.
  9. Performs other tasks as needed and assigned by the Head of Technical Services.

Qualifications / Experience
The minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree or a combination of education and library experience. Basic computer experience with internet searching and standard office software, including Microsoft Office products, is required.

Manual dexterity to manipulate library materials is required; Ability to communicate orally and in writing effectively. Reaching above shoulder heights, below the waist or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the work day; Ability to do repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy. Employee may need to carry, push, pull, or lift up to 40 pounds. Proper lifting techniques required. Push and pull a fully loaded cart. Must have ability to work under pressure, coordinate multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and meet firm deadlines.

COVID-19 Changes/Additions to Job Description: 
The employee in this position will be assigned to train inside the library for a number of weeks until job proficiency is reached. At that time, the employee in this position may work from home on a regular set schedule. The employee will be expected to come to the library at least weekly to pick up and return items to be cataloged and to meet with colleagues. While in any library building, masks must be worn at all times unless on break in the lunch room. Six feet of physical distance from patrons and coworkers is expected at all times. To work remotely, applicants must have solid bandwidth internet access at home. A laptop, monitor, and other work tools will be provided by the library. The option to work remotely may be discontinued with a 30-day notice to the staff member, though the library has no formal plans at this time to eliminate remote work for any staff member.
